About this Initiative

Golden Rule First is a national initiative to enrich elementary education by offering a positive, values-centered alternative to trauma-focused history months — including current practices surrounding Black History Month. While such observances are rooted in important intentions to honor history and foster awareness, past racial conflict can unintentionally overwhelm young learners. Without first building a foundation of shared values and empathy, children may struggle to process complex themes of injustice, sometimes leading to disengagement or confusion about their place in the story.

Golden Rule First proposes a complementary path: centering education on the timeless principle, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” This approach aims to nurture empathy, mutual respect, unity, and moral character in all students — creating a common ground where history can be understood within a hopeful, forward-looking framework.

This initiative is not about erasing history. Rather, it seeks to reframe early learning to emphasize shared values, human dignity, and civic responsibility — helping children develop the moral foundation needed to engage meaningfully with history as they grow.

Our goal is to foster school cultures where children see themselves as part of a shared human story — one defined not by division, but by character, cooperation, and the inherent worth of all people.
